On the Ground
Two Berlins exist simultaneously in September. One involves the Brandenburg Gate, museum island, and the official reckoning with history — dense, necessary, and not to be rushed. The other involves a club that has been open since Thursday. Both are legitimate and neither cancels the other out. The Currywurst at km 35 — the crowds really do distribute it — is not ironic; it is exactly what the body wants at that point in a race. Walk through Tempelhof airport, which closed in 2008 and became a park inside the former runways, and try to grasp what the city decided to do with its own past. The döner here is the source material for everything you've eaten since. Treat it accordingly.
